A heavy heart. Hilary Duff took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute following the death of ex Aaron Carter on Saturday, November 5th.

“To Aaron – I’m sorry that life has been so hard for you and that you’ve had to fight in front of the whole world,” Duff, 35, wrote via Instagram Saturday night. “You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent…man, my teenage self loved you so deeply. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest ♥️.”

On Saturday, a 911 call was placed at 11 am local time from Carter’s California home, according to reports from TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter. A representative later confirmed We Weekly that the “I Want Candy” singer was found dead in his house. He was 34 years old.

The Florida native who is the younger brother of the Backstreet Boys Nick Carterrose to fame in 2000 as a child singer and rapper and began dating Duff in 2000 – when they were both just 13 years old. The couple continued an on-and-off romance until it ended for good in 2003. During their various breakups, Aaron was often linked to Lindsay Lohan.

“I started dating Hilary [Duff] on my 13th birthday,” he told the CNBC host in 2005. “I was dating her for a year and a half and then I got a little bored, so I went and started meeting Lindsay, dating Lindsay.”

O A Cinderella Story star moved on Joel Madden in 2004 and later married the former NHL player Mike Comrie in 2010. After the split, she married musician Matthew Koma in 2019. Aaron, however, has continued to refer to alumnus Younger as the “love of his life” over the years.

In 2012, the “I’m All About You” artist spoke to Fox News about Duff’s wedding, the news of the pregnancy, and his regret over losing her. “I’m so happy that she’s in a successful relationship and that she’s going to have a baby,” he said. “Sometimes I think to myself, maybe it could have been me, but it is what it is.”

Two years later, Aaron took to social media to apparently share that he still carried a torch for the “Come Clean” singer. “I will spend the rest of my life trying to improve myself to get back to her. I don’t care what ANY of you think,” the “Sooner or Later” singer wrote after retweeting a photo of Duff and captioning the post, “hilary duff is impeccable.”

In April 2014, Aaron said entertainment tonight that he “would never give up on Hilary, ever.”

Duff, in turn, responded to Aaron’s declarations of love during an interview with BuzzFeed that same year.

“I keep seeing it, that he keeps doing it. I I don’t know how I feel. I mean, that was a long time ago and obviously I’m still married and I have a baby and we kind of…” she said, before the reporter interrupted, “Haven’t we met?”

The former Disney star responded: Yes, they don’t know each other… so… yes.

Duff and Comrie, 42, welcomed son Luca in 2012 but ended up splitting in January 2014. Koma and how i met your father married after two years of dating, and the couple shares daughters Banks and Mae, born in 2018 and 2021 respectively.

Aaron, meanwhile, welcomed a son with ex-fiancée Melanie Martin in November 2021. The two dated until their most recent split in February.

“It’s all a beautiful blessing because I’ve had many relationships and started [to] kind of [give] in love. I was talking about having a family years ago.” Aaron exclusively said We in December 2021 of being a first-time parent. “I [wanted] being at home and enjoying the love of my life and my son. Now that you’re here, it’s like an epiphany. Every minute now has become so precious and every bit of time that passes now… [really] I changed my thinking gears. I’ve given a lot of people a second and third chance, as you can see with us and the things we’ve been through.”

He added: “The person I am today – I want to be a better version of myself. [the person] I was the day before this. So tomorrow, I want to be a better version of myself than I was the day before. So that’s what I’m really looking for and really just peace and serenity and exercising more of those things. And really holding myself accountable for my failures. You can use your willpower to make a difference with yourself. You need to be able to recognize how you look, how you feel, and you need to know that your body is a temple and you need to appreciate it and take care of it.”
